Curatorial Project February 2021
I had the privilege to curate a Viewing Room from the K. Caraccio Collection.
Tell Me Another StoryCurated by Nadia Martinez Works by Vladimir Adreenkov, Arun Bose, Isabel Bigelow, Lamar Briggs, Alexander Brodsky and Ilya Utkin, Kathy Caraccio, Hugh Kepets, Stephen Lorber, Takahiro Maruno, Louise Nevelson, and Doris Seidler. This selection of prints from 1954 to 2017 walks a fine line between figurative and abstraction, where colors, shapes, textures, and compositions create narratives, allowing our imagination to construct our own stories. A door that just closed or it’s about to open, a full moon or a cold afternoon. Would he cross to the other side? What is behind that opening?

I was nominated for National Museum of Women in the Arts, Women to Watch 2018 by Shannon R. Stratton Museum of Arts and Design's William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator.
Featuring Alice Hope, Nadia Martinez, and Barb Smith
Program Details
Thursday, October 19, 2017 - 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
The Theater at MAD
Program Description
Presented in partnership with the Greater New York Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Women to Watch 2018 will focus on the use of metal as an artistic medium. Moderated by Shannon R. Stratton, MAD’s William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator, the event features artists Alice Hope, Nadia Martinez, and Barb Smith in conversation about their work.
Long considered the work of men, metalsmithing has historically been seen by many as too physical and grueling for women. In the modern and contemporary eras, however, women artists have used metal to create a broad variety of objects, ranging from functional furniture and minimalist jewelry to purely aesthetic abstractions and large sculptural works.
Located in Washington, DC, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) is the only major museum in the world solely dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in the visual, performing, and literary arts. NMWA brings recognition to art by women from all periods and nationalities by exhibiting, preserving, acquiring, and researching art by women and by educating the public about their accomplishments. The Greater New York Committee of NMWA supports the museum in its mission to champion women through the arts by raising awareness of the contributions of women artists in the greater New York area.

Discovering Artists, Both Old and New, at Creative Mischief
By PAUL LASTER, Jun. 2017
Displaying a wide range of artistic disciplines, the National Academy Museum & School’s 6th annual “Creative Mischief” exhibition is a great place to discover artists—both established practitioners and new talents. Featuring more than 100 works by National Academicians, faculty, alumni, and selected student artists, the show reflects the recent history of the 190-year-old cultural institution.
Tackling such contemporary concerns as spirituality, myth, nature and artifice, geometry and the body, illusion and form, symbolism, urban dreams, and play, “Creative Mischief” takes over the full exhibition space of the museum, which is housed in one of the few remaining Beaux-Arts mansions open to the public on Fifth Avenue, and in the Sonia Gechtoff Gallery at the National Academy School.

Creative Mischief at the National Academy Museum
Latina mixed-media visual artist Nadia Martinez joins a stellar roster of international artists at the National Academy Museum
By LatinoLA Contributor
Published on LatinoLA: June 7, 2017

The Archer M. Huntington Townhouse on museum mile in New York City hosts the final installment of the National Academy Museum's annual art exhibition, "Creative Mischief" known for presenting a diverse roster of international artists. The museum announced plans to sell the famous Beaux Art mansion, which means, legend 5th Avenue loses one of its most exquisite public spaces.
Part of what makes "Creative Mischief" so engaging is that the illustrious, historic hosts subject matters that range from naughty to vice, from evil to nice. Sexual violence, despair in poverty, spiritual recalibration, and other topics of the human heart fill three floors of the beautiful mansion.
Latina mixed media artist Nadia Martinez hangs a site-specific installation of meticulously netted resistors and crystals, and fellow sculptor Borinquen Gallo incorporates architectural building motifs into casts of silver-grey automotive hubcaps.

“Containment, Connection and Contemplation: Three solo exhibitions, held in a spectacular former photography studio loft, brings together three international artists [Kathryn Cameron, Nadia Martinez, and Taka Maruno] using different media who are exploring the intimate relationship between nature and man. The exhibition features works in a dialogue with the viewer that evoke an ambiance between poetry and structure, machinery and subtlety.”
Containment, Connection and Contemplation
These three solo exhibitions are curated by Venice-based artistic director and curator Maurizio Pellegrin, who has had a hand in an impressive 150 solo and 400 group exhibitions around the world. That’s a lot of art. These works, in particular, are all tied together because they collectively explore humanity’s relationship to both nature and technology, which are two classic similar-but-different forces in the world.
While the works on view are mostly sculptural, each artist takes a unique approach to composition and materials. Rather than exploring the tech vs. nature theme in ways that might be heavy-handed or passé, the ideas predominantly come forth in how each piece is created. Kathryn Cameron builds her sculptures using items reminiscent of tree bark or leaves, Nadia Martinez makes pieces out of computer parts, and Taka Maruno creates soft and colorful print installations that simultaneously recall imagery like bacteria, street art, and flowers.
